Book Summary of The Promise of Deer Run
America’s war for freedom from England has been over for seven years, but the wounds of that conflict still plague the minds and hearts of the residents of Deer Run.
Young American veteran Nathaniel Stearns, suffering from the memories of war that haunt him in the night, has withdrawn to a life of isolation. He still awaits his father who never returned from the war—a mystery that haunts him.
He is brought out of his self-imposed exile by a near-tragedy in the woods that brings him face-to-face with nineteen-year-old Sarah Thomsen, someone he had long admired but he assumed had eyes for another. This chance encounter opens a crack into the door of his heart as mutual affection quickly blooms.
But slander and lies soon mar the budding romance, rendering both Sarah and Nathaniel wounded and untrusting as their faith in both their God and each other is shattered. Set in 1790 and filled with rich detail of the era, this book continues the story of the Thomsen and Lowe families as they struggle to survive in the aftermath of the war that birthed the United States.
The Promise of Deer Run is Book Two in the Deer Run Saga. Book one is entitled, The Road to Deer Run.

What are readers saying about The Promise of Deer Run?
It is an absolute MUST READ! You will pick it up and not want to put it down… The Promise of Deer Run is a historical novel of the highest caliber! The author, Elaine Marie Cooper, has a keen sense of writing to the senses and emotions. I truly felt as though I was living in the plot itself, as a character IN the play, not a reader on the periphery.
– Lisa Syler, www.LollipopandPearls.blogspot.com
. It's a journey of love and of promise. The story is well written and has a great post-American Revolution feel. It is evident that Elaine Marie Cooper spent many hours researching every detail to get it just right. Her hard work paid off because every scene was very believable in the settings. Along with the capturing the era, the characters are well developed and their young and innocence is added in each page.
- Jennee Thompson, jenneethompson.blogspot.com
Elaine Marie Cooper certainly has some serious potential to become a strong and wonderful voice in Christian fiction. I loved The Promise of Deer Run so much that I never want to miss another word she writes. This book is heartwarming and endearing with a strong Christian message that I appreciated so much. I appreciated everything about this book. I highly recommend The Promise of Deer Run, but definitely do yourself a favor and read the first book in this series as well.
- C. Kendall, Amazon review
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:
Is there a story behind this novel?
The story behind The Promise of Deer Run began when I was writing the first book in the saga, The Road to Deer Run. When describing the nightmares from war that the character Daniel experienced, I began to think about all the soldiers on both sides that had residual emotional scars from battle. Then I thought about all the soldiers of today who suffer from some sort of post-traumatic stress related to war. It made me decide to share the focus of this sequel with both the love story of Sarah and Nathaniel (a veteran) and the after-effects that he experienced due to the terrible memories from being a soldier on the frontlines in the American Revolution. I think it is a story that many veterans and their families can relate to today.
What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
I so enjoy the true tales of those who led interesting lives, especially in history. I read the biography of Bob Dole called One Soldier’s Story as part of my research for this current book. Very inspiring. I also love novels. I just finished a delightful contemporary women’s fiction entitled “A Summer in Oakville” by Lisa Lickel and Shellie Neumeier. And I always love the classics! Looking forward to picking up Jane Eyre again—a novel that I have not read since childhood. So many books...so little time!
If you were a style of music, what style would you be?
Either Celtic or Colonial American Music. I know, I know...you’re all lining up to hear my CD’s, aren’t you!! LOL!
Those both sound really good, Elaine! What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?
It’s a pretty embarrassing story! Years ago when I was a Nursing Assistant, I was working in a post-op unit. It was Christmas time and they were playing holiday tunes over the intercom. Elvis’ song, “Blue Christmas” came on—a song that I find pretty annoying! (Forgive me, Elvis fans!) I was working at the nurse’s station so I started doing my worst possible Elvis impression to make it sound ridiculous. Unbeknownst to me, the intercom at the desk was on, so my horrendous Elvis impression was being broadcast all over the floor! One of the nurses rushed up to me and said, “EVERYONE is listening to your song—and now they’re all REALLY sick!” I was mortified! But I can laugh about it now!
Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.
One of my favorite verses is Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” The first time the Lord used this verse to encourage me was after I took my nursing boards to complete my R.N. I just knew in my mind that I had failed the exam and was feeling downtrodden. The next morning as I was doing my devotions, I opened to Philippians and read these words. It was a truly uplifting moment. And when I received my official notification that I had passed my nursing boards five days later (a record time for being notified), all I could do was thank my Lord Who had carried me through the long, arduous nursing program. Now that I am an author, God continues to use these same words to encourage me. I often add the verse to my signature at book signings.

Praying for God's Will
This picture was taken at the Vatican Museum. It's very beautiful and impressive in size. Why include this in this post? It's a good place to consider the true will of God.
For many years I was very concerned about doing things in God's will and read a number of books on this subject. I was fearful about NOT doing His will, but I have found through the years that there are different levels of God's will and praying for it. There is his permissive will, which gives us a lot of room to kind of pardon the expression, hang ourselves, but God understands our weaknesses and works those things into the fabric of our lives. "Thy will be done" is in the beginning of the well known "Our Father" and sets the tone for the day, as we release circumstances into His hands and pray for His presence in our lives, then the fear and worry dissolves. I often pray for God's perfect will, but that is something only He can accomplish and it isn't something we can push or strive for, though we can certainly pray for it. However, I do believe God wants us to pray for specifics concerning His will. We are in this relationship with God together. It's a give and take situation.Prayer is communication and getting to know our God. I don't think God wants us to spend less time praying, but less time fretting, worrying and praying manipulative prayers, which leaves us more time to pray effective prayers, which are found in His Word. There are so many great examples of this which I use in Letters to God on a Prodigal Son. I'll include some of them in my next post.
Anyway, I use to think God's will was static, but I'm seeing that it's much more fluid. I believe there are many options we can take that are within His will. He does want us to make decisions, we're not puppets, but when we ask for His guidance we're allowing Him into the equation. He uses many methods to direct us into His will, and I'm glad for this because He is an amazingly creative God, not a limiting as some would like to think. Yet, there are some definite things that are not His will, like destroying ourselves or others, but it's so amazing even in this He will work out for good!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT
THE BOOK OF RUTH A STORY OF LOVE AND REDEMPTION
Each episode detailed in Ruth teaches lessons—of God’s plan, precise and solid. Ruth reminds us of God's plans; the ones we might not understand, yet vibrant in His eyes. The theme illustrates the journey that can take one to places impossible for man, but possible with God. The story of Ruth as highlighted in this book opens a new revelation of God’s hand at work. His grace is active in the life of those who choose to obey in humility and commitment. The prayer at the end of each lesson brings a challenge for all and ushers relevance to us today.
---Review by Janet Perez Eckles author of Simply Salsa
I love the story of Ruth. Deborah shed light on the truths in this inspiring book in the Bible. I love that she showed the connection between Ruth and Boaz, and Christ and the church. Even though I've studied Ruth before, Deborah pointed out several details that I hadn't known. It's amazing how God speaks through His children. Deborah has a loving, humble heart for the Lord. You can see her heart throughout the book. I am so happy for her first release! I look forward to more books from Deborah in the future! Great job, Deborah:)

A Psalm for Parents of Prodigals
Oh God, You are my God
And I will worship You.
Though darkness and confusion
engulfs me,
You will light my path.
Though heartache and disappointments
Surround me,
You will lift up my soul.
You will meet me in my times of sorrow,
And comfort me.
You will lead me and guide me
when I don’t know which way
to turn.
Though no one else may know the way,
You will reveal it to me.
Though our enemy desires my son’s life,
You have spared him.
May he dedicate his life to You,
And follow Your footsteps.
May You illuminate my son’s path
back to You, that he may walk Righteously in Your ways.
May You open my prodigal son’s eyes
for the task he is to do
with his life.
Lord, look down upon us and lift us up.
Thank You for preserving our life.
May You give us wisdom,
And guide us in all we say and do.
I place my son and my husband
in Your hands.
Soften their hearts towards You,
And keep them moldable.
Let all of us be clay in Your hands. Amen.

Letters to God on a Prodigal Son Excerpts and Giveaway
Lastnight I had a booksigning at a local bookstore and had a good discussion of my latest release, Letters to God on a Prodigal Son: Overcoming Addiction Through Prayer. This power packed journal and guide was birthed from the painful passage I experienced while navigating the minefield of my son’s addiction. I kept a diary that contained many insightful prayers, letters, and scriptures that I thought would help others navigate the turbulent waters of a prodigal’s addiction, so I worked on transforming it into a book. I added two sections, Lessons Learned and Suggestions that I thought would further help others to avoid some of the pitfalls I experienced, while offering a lifeline of hope. At the time my son was going through this terrible ordeal, I couldn’t find any Christian books on the subject that gave practical and spiritual, not textbook, advice. Letters to God, on a Prodigal Son was designed to fit this need. It’s filled with the heart-felt letters and prayers of a mother, key spiritual insights and practical advice. My desire in writing this book is to help others and minister to them though this true life story. Send an e-mail BEFORE Nov. 8th to letterstogod27@yahoo.com and your name will be entered into a contest to receive a FREE e-book or paperback copy !
Here are a few excerpts:
Suggestions: It is difficult not to be consumed with your addicted child, but you must not put him or her first. Your marriage and your own physical, emotional and mental stability are very important in order to be able to see things from a clear perspective. While you can pray fervently, don’t let the child or problem consume your thoughts and your time. Make time for you and/or your spouse, your other children and yourself. Spend time in prayer for other’s needs as well as your own.
Life Changing Promises:
During this time I really learned how to pray the scriptures and promises. I needed encouragement everyday and some promises that I could hold onto continually. Here is one more that I clung to:
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46: 1-3 NIV). I drew on this verse for God’s strength. I tried not to be afraid, but I had a lot to fear for Ben. I tried to steel myself against the inevitable. My son was going to fail the drug test and be kicked out of the program. Even if this were so, the world would still be intact. I certainly would be shaken, though it wasn’t what I wanted to happen
Suggestions: Find some scriptures and promises of your own that ring true to you and your situation. Write them down, memorize them and quote them frequently when doubt and fear overwhelm you.
Here’s two excerpts from the chapter “Glimmer of Light”
Jesus doesn’t want us to put any relationship above Him and get our peace and joy from them. These words pierce my heart, for this is the work God is doing in my life. I cannot depend on anyone for joy or happiness. I must rely solely on Jesus. He must be my source. It’s not that I can’t receive joy from others, but Jesus needs to be the root of my joy.
Later in that chapter:
I believe God spoke a clear Word to me to continue to come against Satan as Moses came against Pharaoh. Satan does not readily let go of what he perceives to be his. Even though Ben is God’s child, as the nation of Israel was the Lord’s, Satan is reluctant to let go of what he thinks he possesses. Pharaoh needed to be confronted time and time again, and kept relenting on his promise to let the Israelites go.

Reviews for Letters to God:
Letters to God on a Prodigal Son is an awesome book that SOOO needed to be written. In the way she writes letters to God, we can see inside her heart as a mom seeing her son suffer an addiction, and suffers through her emotional rollercoaster. There are so many moms who deny that their child is involved in drugs. They just want to believe the best in their children, as we all do. Anita includes the signs to watch for as she takes you through her journey that just might save your child's life! By Celeste
I recommend Letters to God, on a Prodigal Son book to all my friends with adult children who currently embrace the world more often than the Lord. It is a story of hope. But even more so, it is a story of surrender and allowing God to change you through His Word and grace.
So maybe you don't have to have a child who has wandered away from his/her Christian foundation to enjoy this book and gain from its insights. I don't have a prodigal ... but Anita Estes' Letters to God remind me that thankfully God is in the restoration business. Gloria Clover
Letters to God on a Prodigal Son not only shares insights into the spiritual realm and explains the war that is waged against our children's souls, but Author Anita Estes teaches, how through prayer, faith and worship, one can be victorious over the powers of evil that hold our children in bondage. This journal accompanied with the lessons learned is a powerful tool for any parent finding themselves in similar circumstances.
